✨ Candlemas: where does the crêpe tradition come from? 🥞
Every year on February 2nd, Candlemas lights up our tables… and our kitchens!
But where does this delicious tradition come from?
👉 Originally, Candlemas is a Christian celebration marking the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, 40 days after Christmas. Candles were blessed on this day, symbolizing light and hope — which is where the name comes from, derived from the Latin candelarum.
👉 Even earlier, in Roman times, this period symbolized the gradual return of light. People already celebrated fertility and the promise of future harvests.
🥞 And what about crêpes?
Their round, golden shape resembles the sun — a symbol of prosperity and brighter days ahead. Using leftover flour was also believed to bring abundance for the coming year.
🍀 A popular superstition says that flipping the first crêpe while holding a coin brings good luck all year long… so it’s worth a try 😉
👉 Whether religious, pagan, or simply delicious, Candlemas is above all a moment of sharing and togetherness.
And you — sugar, jam, or chocolate? 😄
